Es hijo único y sus padres no forman precisamente una pareja feliz. Viven en una sociedad totalitaria, aséptica, protegida del resto del mundo por un escudo antimateria y sometida a un férreo control. Los juegos de azar constituyen la religión del estado y el éxito personal es producto de la suerte. El alcohol y el tabaco están prohibidos, así como el suicidio, la depresión y, por supuesto, la libertad de pensamiento. Para que tales leyes se cumplan, cada ciudadano está sometido al control de un microchip que se le coloca en el cerebro al alcanzar la edad de 14 años.
