La vida de Abu Kamil ibn Aslam ibn Mohammed, el llamado calculista egipcio, transcurre entre los años 850 y 930. Vivió en Fustat, entonces la capital de Egipto, y fue contemporáneo de ibn Tulun, fundador de la dinastía de los Tuluníes, de quien recibió el encargo de dirigir el arsenal. Esto hace pensar que, además de reputación como matemático, la tenía también como ingeniero. Su obra más importante es un tratado de álgebra, en el cual sigue la estela del Álgebra de al-Jwarizmi pero mejorando algunos métodos, utilizando con toda desenvoltura cantidades irracionales cuadráticas e interesándose por los problemas indeterminados. A este tipo de problemas dedica también una obra, El libro de las aves, cuya traducción al castellano ha sido también publicada en Editorial Nivola.
