Holanda, 1654. Es el siglo de oro neerlandés, el tiempo de las ideas de Spinoza, cuando el arte de Vermeer y Rembrandt florece junto a los tulipanes que salpican de color la campiña holandesa. Allí, en una granja, Catrijn, nacida y criada en la pobreza, vive infelizmente casada; sin embargo, son tiempos de cambio, también para las mujeres. Tras enviudar, Catrijn sabe que ha llegado el momento de afrontar por sí misma el mundo que la rodea: buscar fortuna en la ciudad, acaso enamorarse y, por qué no, perseguir su gran sueño: llegar a ser decoradora de cerámica. Comienza así un recorrido que la lleva a la gran Ámsterdam y a las fábricas de cerámicas de la ciudad de Delft; lugares donde transcurre la historia y en los que las mujeres valientes como ella son capaces de forjar su propio destino.
