Ángel Ganivet fue cónsul en Helsinki en 1896. Cartas finlandesas surge de la idea de contar a sus amigos granadinos cómo era aquella tierra tan distinta y tan alejada de España no sólo geográficamente. Su irónica mirada recorre las tradiciones y costumbres de ese país nórdico, desde cómo comen hasta «cómo se mueren los finlandeses». En el diálogo que establece entre la sociedad finlandesa y la española analiza la España de finales del siglo xix de una manera muy certera. "Hombres del Norte" son seis ensayos sobre los más representativos escritores noruegos de la época. En ellos nos acerca la gran literatura escandinava desde una mentalidad meridional. Publicamos estos dos textos porque reconocemos en el espíritu de Ganivet nuestro deseo de dar a conocer la cultura de los países nórdicos.
