El absurdo, lo irracional o irrisorio están presentes en esta obra. Su protagonista, el innoble y grotesco Ubú, va directo al corazón de la conciencia burguesa y todavía hoy la escandaliza en sus numerosas representaciones y adaptaciones. " Ubú rey " es una obra imprescindible en el teatro moderno por su permanente actualidad. La última adaptación en España acaba de hacerla Albert Boadella con " Ubú president " .
