Dèmea, defensor aferrissat de les virtuts formatives de la disciplina, educa un dels seus dos fills (Ctesifont) amb rigor i severitat, alhora que confia l?altre (Èsquines) al seu germà solter (Mició), home hel?lenitzat, liberal, sensible i dedicat a l?otium. Però resulta que tots dos pupils cometen entremaliadures semblants, de manera que la severitat antiga es revela ben poc eficaç.
