Gran conocedor también del arte de los grandes maestros españoles, su relación con la cultura española se manifiesta principalmente en su obsesión por el Retrato del Papa Inocencio X, realizado por Velázquez en 1650. Zurbarán, El Greco o Goya, cuyas obras pudo admirar en el Museo del Prado de Madrid, también influyeron de manera evidente (y a veces no tanto) en su trabajo artístico.
