Los cuentos populares españoles han venido siendo recopilados por unos pocos y esforzados folkloristas gracias a los cuales hoy puede hablarse de una tradición, si no recuperada en su totalidad, pues varias regiones españolas carecen aún de colecciones de cuentos recogidos, sí suficiente como para reclamar un lugar de importancia en la historia no ya de nuestro folklore sino de la literatura española en general. Es sobre todo desde un punto de vista literario como se presenta esta recopilación de cuentos tomados de Asturias, Cantabria, León, las dos Castillas, Extremadura, Andalucía, así como de las áreas lingüísticas del catalán, el gallego y el euskera.
