El fallido intento juvenil que supuso para David Hume (1711-1776) la acogida de su " Tratado de la naturaleza humana " dio origen unos años más tarde a la " Investigación sobre el conocimiento humano " (1748) ?publicado también en esta colección? y a la " Investigación sobre los principios de la moral " (1751), que Hume consideraba su obra más conseguida desde el punto de vista de la correspondencia entre la elegancia formal y la sutileza de los argumentos. La tesis fundamental del libro se desarrolla como una crítica a las ideas de Locke y Hobbes, según las cuales las pasiones y acciones morales se remiten al egoísta amor de sí. Por el contrario, Hume pone el acento sobre el sentimiento favorable a la felicidad del género humano y el resentimiento por su desdicha.
