Segurament la seva Història de Roma no ens descobreix res de nou, ni fa una interpretació original de l'urbs fundada per Ròmul i Rem. És una història que ja ha estat explicada. Però el seu mèrit és tornar-ho a fer sense academicismes, a través d'una sèrie de retrats que il·luminen els protagonistes i els despullen de tota artificiositat.
