El monarca Xahriar té tan poca fe en la fidelitat de les dones, que s'ha acostumat a prendre una donzella cada nit i executar-la l'endemà. Quan li arriba el torn, la bella Xahrazad, culta i intel·ligent, sap captivar el monarca amb el seu do de contar històries que s'allarguen tota la nit. A l'alba interromp el relat, que el rei li pregarà de reprendre el capvespre següent. Així esquivarà la mort i, al cap de mil i una nits, haurà aplegat les històries més diverses i seductores que s'hagin explicat mai.
