L?any 1929, en ple ascens del nazisme, Stefan Zweig va publicar, sota el títol Petita crònica. Quatre narracions, un recull de relats breus que gaudirien d?un èxit extraordinari: tres edicions successives i 100.000 exemplars venuts en només dos anys. Tot i la diversitat temàtica de cadascuna de les quatre narracions, aquest llibre constitueix una crònica literària de l?Europa d?entreguerres amb un fort component autobiogràfic. Dels quatre relats ?«La col·lecció invisible», «Un episodi del llac de Ginebra», «Leporella» i «El llibreter Mendel»?, aquest darrer ha gaudit d?un èxit especial i s?ha consagrat com un cant d?amor als llibres i als llibreters. El lector té l?oportunitat de llegir aquestes narracions per primera vegada en català i en la forma que Zweig va donar originalment al llibre.
