Davant la impossibilitat de conèixer la model, i desesperat d'amor, se suïcida, però abans intenta fer-li arribar unes cartes. Dos-cents anys després, un prestigiós director de cinema experimenta la mateixa fixació que Frabetti pel quadre. L'obsessió per dur a la pantalla la història d'amor del marquès pren forma quan una amiga el posa en contacte amb l'actual propietari del llenç.
