Oliver Twist és la història d'un nen orfe que sobreviu en els ambients més pobres i marginals de la gran ciutat industrial moderna: el Londres de 1830. Amb un realisme fosc que incorpora altes dosis de sàtira i d'humor negre, Dickens retrata un món en el qual algú com Oliver, víctima de l'explotació infantil més descarnada, no sembla tenir cap sortida que no siguin l'hospici, la delinqüència, la presó o una mort prematura. Però enmig d'aquest panorama desolador, poblat per un seguit de personatges inoblidables, triomfen malgrat tot la innocència i la bondat del protagonista. Per a aquesta edició, la traducció catalana de Pau Romeva, apareguda el 1929, ha estat revisada amb tota cura per Joan Riba perquè el lector d'avui pugui assaborir plenament un dels cims de la novel·lística del segle XIX.
