A les acaballes d?un sopar a casa d?un banquer parisenc en honor d?un home de negocis alemany, el convidat explica una història de por: l?any 1799, dos joves estudiants de medicina mobilitzats durant les guerres napoleòniques van a trobar el seu regiment en una petita ciutat alemanya. Allà s?allotgen a L?hostal vermell, on coincideixen amb un negociant alemany, amb qui comparteixen sopar i habitació. Aquest els explica que a la seva bossa hi porta cent mil francs en or i diamants. Un dels dos joves somia que mata el negociant i s?apodera dels seus diners. L?endemà, en despertar-se, descobreix horroritzat que el negociant alemany és mort i el seu company ha fugit.
