Entre sus libros de poemas destacan El jardín extranjero (1983), Diario cómplice (1987), Las flores del frío (1991), Habitaciones separadas (1994), Completamente viernes (1998), La intimidad de la serpiente (2003) y Vista cansada (2008). Ha recibido el Premio Nacional de Literatura (1994), el Premio Nacional de la Crítica (2003). En el 2009 el Gremio de Libreros de Madrid le concedió el Premio al Mejor Libro del Año por su novela Mañana no será lo que Dios quiera.
