Les col·leccions singulars o especials de les biblioteques constitueixen un ampli ventall documental i intel·lectual. Sovint són col·leccions independents del conjunt del dipòsit general de la biblioteca. Estan formades per documents amb suports o característiques físiques pròpies (mapes, vídeos, suports musicals, etc.) i molt sovint són fruit de donatius o llegats que, generosament, han estat cedits a la Universitat. Altres vegades han estat adquirides per la institució universitària. En tot cas, són un element diferenciador i un dels principals actius de les biblioteques de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
