Una chica educada como un varón, se declara a un joven que le gusta, algo imperdonable entre la aristocracia inglesa del XIX en que la mujer no puede tomar la iniciativa. El hecho provoca, por un lado, que el joven la rechace humillantemente y por otro que su verdadero enamorado huya de ella por culpa de un equívoco. El azar hará que tras diversas peripecias (entre ellas, un terrible naufragio en que la protagonista salva a su enamorado, que ha caído a un mar tormentoso, haciendo un fuego en lo alto de un promontorio) se aclare el equívoco y los dos enamorados puedan materializar su amor.
