En abril de 1961, invitado por el presidente, su amigo Ignacio Aguilera, Gerardo Diego pronunció tres conferencias en el Ateneo de Santander, bajo el título general ?La estela de Góngora?, en el que trataba de trazar la impronta del genial cordobés en la lírica española posterior, como trayectoria general de su influjo, primero, y mediante el análisis de dos casos poéticos específicos, después, uno en la España peninsular y otro en la virreinal y ultramarina. Esos son también propósito y caracteres comunes a los textos reunidos en esta obra.
