La trayectoria vital de Jaime Masones de Lima, nacido en Cerdeña en 1696, se refleja en una brillante carrera diplomática y militar a lo largo de la cual desempeñó importantes cargos como mariscal de campo (1747), plenipotenciario español en las conferencias de paz de Aquisgrán (1748), teniente general (1749) y embajador en Francia (1752). Este itinerario biográfico alcanza nuevos matices a la luz de la correspondencia con su amigo José de Carvajal, Ministro de Estado desde 1746 hasta su muerte en 1754.
