Las Cruzadas impregnaron la cultura y la sociedad de la Edad Media de manera decisiva. Además de las Cruzadas a «Tierra Santa», Nikolas Jaspert aborda también el estudio de las guerras emprendidas tanto contra quienes profesaban credos diferentes en la península Ibérica o en el territorio báltico, como contra los «enemigos interiores» de la Cristiandad. Otro de los temas centrales de la obra son las órdenes religiosas de caballería, que marcarían durante largo tiempo la historia de Europa. Gracias a un planteamiento que abarca una gran diversidad de aspectos y a su información sistemática, el autor logra insertar las Cruzadas en el fenómeno general de la «expansión europea».
