Aquest volum recull les aportacions de diversos especialistes sobre l'activitat historiogràfica de Joan Fuster i, a més, sobre la seua relació intel·lectual i personal amb alguns historiadors destacats del seu temps -en particular, Jaume Vicens Vives, Joan Reglà i Pierre Vilar-, però també sobre la seua posició davant les perspectives creades pel nacionalisme historiogràfic espanyol -concretament a través de Claudio Sánchez Albornoz i Américo Castro. Com diu Josep Fontana, algunes pàgines escrites per Fuster "són les millors que mai hagi escrit un historiador valencià". I no dubta a qualificar-lo d'historiador perquè "ser historiador vol dir tenir uns coneixements globals sobre una societat i una capacitat d'entendre-la", com els tenia Fuster, i no basta, en canvi, posseir la patent que donen le sfacultats universitàries corresponents.
