Dentro de su proyecto de examen de la situación religiosa de nuestro tiempo, en este libro Hans Küng se ocupa del cristianismo, poder espiritual que sigue presente en todo el mundo y que constituye la mayor de las religiones mundiales. Responder a la pregunta sobre cómo y por qué el cristianismo ha llegado a ser lo que es hoy con respecto a lo que podría ser implica diferenciar entre las manifestaciones históricas -contingentes- del cristianismo y la esencia que da cohesión a iglesias tan distintas y siglos cristianos tan diferentes. Es mérito de esta obra extraordinaria hacer que la una aparezca a través del examen crítico de las otras. Y ello con vistas a lograr una reforma verdaderamente radical, en la que lo esencial resplandezca de nuevo.
