Dins un còdex de la Biblioteca Vaticana, una investigadora descobreix uns folis, escrits en català i italià, que revelen un seguit d?enigmes sobre el manuscrit únic de l?Espill, la gran obra literària del metge valencià Jaume Roig. Aquest estrany relat anònim porta la investigadora a la València de 1480 i al Nàpols i a la Roma dels inicis del segle XVI, i li permet saber quin va ser el dificultós periple que va haver de fer l?Espill fins que va trobar repòs a les lleixes vaticanes. Durant aquest viatge, però, els personatges que custodien el manuscrit únic viuen fets extraordinaris, que només aquells folis anònims són capaços de narrar.
