Jacob Grimm (Hanau, 1785 - Berlín, 1863) i Wilhelm Grimm (Hanau, 1786 - Berlín, 1859), cursaren estudis de dret i exerciren de bibliotecaris a Cassel, i més tard, de professors a la universitat de Götingen, d?on foren expulsats per les seves idees lliberals, i a la universitat de Berlín. Investigadors infatigables i observadors atents, emprengueren un treball de recerca de documents sobre els mites i les llegendes heroiques de l?antiga Alemanya,de poesies medievals i de contes populars de tradició oral. Fruit d?aquesta tasca foren aquests Contes de Grimm, que tingueren un èxit immediat i ja al seu temps foren traduïts a altres idiomes. Avui són coneguts arreu del mon.
