En L'assassí que somiava amb un lloc al cel coincideixen les trajectòries de tres personatges: un assassí amb remordiments, una pastora protestant que ha perdut la fe, i un recepcionista amb ganes de deixar enrere una vida gris i miserable. Formen una estranya societat en què la religiosa i el recepcionista porten el negoci i l'assassí només ha de complir els encàrrecs. Tot va bé fins que l'assassí vol abandonar la seva activitat, sobretot des que descobreix la paraula de Déu. Però els altres dos no estan disposats a renunciar al negoci.
