La presente edición recoge textos de diferentes épocas y variadas procedencias que nunca, hasta hoy, habían sido reunidos en un solo volumen. Además de "Los fugitivos", "Oficio de tinieblas", Guerra del tiempo y otros relatos, etc., se incluyen relatos que pertenecen a los inicios literarios de Alejo Carpentier y que nunca antes habían sido recogidos en un libro. Otros tres cuentos, "El cruzado", "La mano belluda" y " El milagro", ven la luz por primera vez y, aunque no pasan de ser una mera curiosidad, son vitales para poder tener una idea más concreta de los primeros pasos literarios de Carpentier. Además de estas novedades, se incluye la traducción que Rafael Rodríguez Beltrán realizó de otro cuento aparecido en una maleta perdida y que durante un tiempo se pensó que era simplemente otra versión de "Historia de lunas". Sin embargo, Beltrán demostró que se trata de una pieza diferente.
