En aquesta obra, Oller comença a realitzar el seu propòsit principal: descriure literàriament la realitat de la societat catalana del seu temps. La papallona, expressió fidel de la menestralia de Barcelona, va marcar l02019;inici del naturalisme a Catalunya i va donar a Narcís Oller fama europea. L02019;any 1885 la novel·la va ser traduïda al francès i va ser prologada per Émile Zola. Narcís Oller (Valls, 1846 - Barcelona, 1930) és el fundador de la novel·la catalana moderna. Les seves grans obres d02019;aquest gènere són: La papallona, Vilaniu, La febre d02019;or, L02019;escanyapobres i Pilar Prim, la majoria traduïdes a diverses llengües. És autor de les novel·les breus Isabel de Galceran, La bogeria, La bufetada i Lo transplantat. Dins la seva producció trobem també nombrosos contes.
