Entre 2011 y 2014 PJ Harvey y Seamus Murphy emprendieron una serie de viajes a Kosovo, Afganistán y Washington D. C. Murphy tenía una amplia experiencia fotografiando conflictos y la vida cotidiana durante muchos años en Kosovo y Afganistán; hacía mucho que PJ Harvey sentía fascinación por ambos países. Washington D. C. representaba la última potencia mundial que vivía con su propio desasosiego. Compartiendo un anhelo y un propósito comunes, Harvey recogió palabras y Murphy coleccionó imágenes. El hueco de la mano es el primer poemario que publica PJ Harvey y se trata de una colaboración única con Seamus Murphy, donde se combinan fotografías que éste tomó durante más de dos décadas con el trabajo creado en los viajes que la pareja realizó junta.
