Només el període baixmedieval havia merescut l?atenció dels nostres historiadors. La resta era, pràcticament, un desert intel·lectual, alguns articles esparsos i un conjunt de dades repartides en una munió de monografies locals. Amb aquest estudi s?intenta fer un primer esbós d?una matèria que encara no s?ha investigat prou i, alhora, s?espera que sigui un incentiu per obrir noves línies d?aproximació.
