Berlín, marzo de 1943. Las temperaturas son gélidas y la moral está por los suelos tras la derrota en Stalingrado. Bernie Gunther ha dejado la brigada criminal y trabaja para la oficina de crímenes de guerra. Llegan informes que hablan de una gigantesca fosa común en un bosque cercano a Smolensko, una zona rusa ocupada por las tropas alemanas. Pero la localización exacta es incierta, hasta que empiezan a aparecer restos humanos en el bosque de Katyn. Los rumores dicen que los cadáveres son de oficiales polacos asesinados por el ejército soviético. Y si es cierto, ese crimen de guerra puede convertirse en una propaganda perfecta para la causa nazi.
