Josef Albers, uno de los más influyentes artistas-educadores del siglo xx, formó parte de la Bauhaus alemana en la década de 1920. En 1933 emigró a Estados Unidos, donde durante dieciséis años ejerció la docencia en el Black Mountain College. En 1950 pasó a la Universidad de Yale como jefe del Departamento de Diseño, y tras su jubilación en 1958 fue nombrado profesor emérito de arte, condición que conservó hasta su muerte en 1976. Distinguido con numerosos galardones y títulos honoríficos, en 1968 fue elegido miembro del National Institute of Arts and Letters, y en 1971 fue el primer artista vivo al que se dedicó una exposición retrospectiva en el Metropolitan Museum of Art de Nueva York.
