Elizabeth Gaskell fue una mujer extraordinaria para su época y su vida fue intensa y muy activa. Tras su boda, a los veintidós años, con el reverendo William Gaskell siempre vivió en Manchester, la gran ciudad industrial del siglo XIX, pero viajó frecuentemente por su país y por Europa. Mujer inteligente, de gran bagaje cultural y muy sociable, contó con numerosas y variadas amistades. Publicó su primera novela a los treinta y ocho años y escribió otras cinco novelas, una biografía, varias novelas cortas, numerosos cuentos y algunos ensayos. Aunque no siempre ha sido así, la calidad de su obra la sitúa entre las grandes escritoras británicas del siglo XIX.
