El irlandés Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (Dublín, 1814-1873) es uno de los primeros y también de los más grandes maestros del terror sobrenatural, asunto al que en sus distintas variantes (con una muy especial predilección por las historias de fantasmas) dedicó numerosas novelas y relatos. Escritores de renombre y gran solvencia en asuntos terroríficos como Bram Stoker, Henry James o J.R. James, entre otros, reconocieron públicamente su magisterio. Durante el último medio siglo, tanto en España como en Hispanoamérica, han ido siendo reeditados sus cuentos y novelas, y no hay antología del género terrorífico que no le incluya en lugar destacado. El familiar y Té verde son dos de sus narraciones más reconocidas y características.
