Arnau d'Amalric recull una visió històrica d'aquest excepcional i polèmic personatge que fou abat de Poblet (1196-1198) i que posteriorment fou nomenat bisbe de Narbona (1212). La croada albigesa, que suposà la mort del comte-rei Pere I a Muret el 1213 i un veritable bany de sang a Occitània, ha sigut sempre temàtica històrica que ha despertat grans passions entre els historiadors. En aquest sentit, una veritable llegenda negra s'estén entorn de la figura d'Arnau Esteve Albert, en aquesta obra, exculpa Arnau d'Amalric de la matança, força atribuïble a Simó de Montfort i als frasncesos, àvids de sotmetre Occitània.
