La seva plàcida existència, però, canvia de sobte quan el mag Gàndalf, en companyia del llegendari Thorin Oakenshield i dotze nans més, es presenta inesperadament al llindar de casa seva perquè els acompanyi en un viatge d'anada i tornada fins a l'antic i llunyà reialme de la Muntanya Solidària, on pretenen saquejar el tresor del drac Smaug.
