Els sofistes, entre els quals Aristòfanes situa Sòcrates, posaven en qüestió el sistema de valors tradicionals i promovien el relativisme moral. L?important és guanyar una causa pública, independentment que sigui justa o no. Així, el vell Estrepsíades, perseguit pels creditors del seu fill, que l?ha arruïnat a causa de la seva afició als cavalls, decideix portar el noi a l?escola dels sofistes, regentada per Sòcrates, perquè aprengui l?art de convencer amb la paraula i el salvi dels seus deutes.
