Denis Diderot (1713-1784) és potser més conegut com a filòsof capdavanter de la Il·lustració francesa, com a conciliador dels conceptes de llibertat individual i d'exigència social, que com a novel·lista. Però, de fet, Jacques el fatalista (1773), la novel·la que ara publiquem -en traducció esplèndida de Joan Tarrida-, és un dels textos narratius més divertits de la literatura universal. Aquesta novel·la picaresca, dialogada, discursiva, d'aventures, escabrosa, i d'una rotunda hilaritat, presenta dues figures contraposades -Jacques i el seu amo- que, en un seguit d'aventures dins d'altres aventures, fan de la narració un repàs implacable, intel·ligentíssim i sofista, del món i dels homes. Pocs autors contemporanis poden aspirar com Diderot a acomplir tan a la perfecció aquella antiga màxima d'"instruir delectant".
