En su importantísima y dilatada obra poética, destacan los libros Violín y otras cuestiones (1956), Gotán (1962), Cólera buey (1964), Los poemas de Sydney West (1969), Relaciones (1973), Si dulcemente (1980), Dibaxu (1994), Valer la pena (2002), País que fue será (2004), Mundar (2007), De atrasalante en su porfía (2009) y El emperrado corazón amora (2011). Ha recibido el Premio Nacional de Poesía Argentina (1997), el Premio Juan Rulfo (2000), el Premio Reina Sofía (2005) y el Premio Cervantes.
Hoy, su último libro, extrema la lucidez descarnada que caracteriza la obra de Gelman. Cierra así sus indagaciones sobre el vacío, la identidad, el amor, la memoria y el sentido de las palabras.
