Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729-1781), considerado el principal dramaturgo de la Ilustración en Alemania, causó verdadero furor entre el público de su época cuando en 1755, con apenas veintiséis años, estrenó Miss Sara Sampson. En esta primera tragedia burguesa de la literatura en lengua alemana, Lessing abandona los modelos del clasicismo teatral francés con el fin de formar y conmover al espectador o lector. Para ello nos presenta, con sus luces y sus sombras, al hombre de su tiempo, y muy en particular a personajes femeninos cada vez más alejados de los modelos tradicionales de casta virtud.
