Lovecraft y ha dado lugar a varias secuelas cinematográficas, aunque «actualizadas» y muy alejadas del original. Inspirada en el Frankenstein de Mary Shelley, según el propio autor, narra las investigaciones del Doctor Herbert West sobre la muerte y la resurrección desde sus tiempos de estudiante hasta poco después de la Primera Guerra Mundial, en la que se alista como cirujano junto a su mejor amigo y ayudante.
