La publicación de este texto en 1956 transformó sustancialmente las investigaciones sobre Tucídides. Romilly consigue mostrar que Tucídides relató la guerra del Peloponeso como una experiencia de una gran profundidad intelectual: no se trataba solo de informar a los lectores sino de descubrirles la existencia de patrones que subyacían a los acontecimientos históricos. Para ello, Tucídides sometió todos los datos históricos a una misma lógica organizadora, se atuvo a rigurosos principios de selección, propuso sugestivas comparaciones, opuso hábilmente distintos discursos para revelar relaciones sistemáticas entre los planes y los resultados, dio sentido a los acontecimientos más ínfimos, e insistió en la constante batalla entre el intelecto y el azar.
