La imagen surrealista reúne cuatro textos teóricos, cuatro intervenciones críticas, sobre distintos aspectos del surrealismo. En todos ellos, subyace la idea de que el surrealismo no es meramente un «movimiento» poético y artístico más, sino una actitud general ante la vida, que busca la ampliación y el enriquecimiento de la existencia humana. Se plantea, también, que el eje de esa actitud, su núcleo, es el papel que se asigna a la imagen, concebida como plasmación del deseo, como flujo erótico, y que actúa como impulso del cambio, de la transformación.
