Una joven acude al detective Hercule Poirot para que resuelva un crimen cometido dieciséis años atrás, cuando su padre fue envenenado y su madre, Caroline, fue condenada por ello. La hija de ambos, Carla, está dispuesta a remover cielo y tierra para descubrir la verdadera identidad del asesino de su padre y limpiar así la memoria de su desdichada madre. Con escasas pruebas y demasiados prejuicios, la tarea de Poirot se complica cuando comprueba que sus cinco sospechosos tienen, aparentemente, sólidas coartadas.
