Para defenderse de una serie de injustas calumnias, José Guadalupe Arroyo, un antiguo militar retirado, decide echar la mirada atrás y poner por escrito los recuerdos que guarda sobre algunos de los hechos de la historia reciente del país de los que fue testimonio. El siempre espléndido escritor Jorge Ibargüengoitia optó en su primera novela por narrar unos acontecimientos rigurosamente históricos, pero quiso cambiar los nombres principales de sus protagonistas y observarlos a través del prisma desmitificador de la sátira, con lo que consiguió diseccionar con inusual brillantez algunos de los sucesos más significativos de una de las últimas páginas del proceso revolucionario mexicano.
