Dashiell Hammet empezó a escribir relatos breves para revistas en 1922 por pura necesidad: una tuberculosis grave le impedía seguir trabajando en la agencia de detectives Pinkerton y le obligaba a ganarse la vida con algún oficio que no exigiera continuidad ni grandes despliegues físicos. Apenas diez años después era el escritor más popular de su tiempo, referencia inexcusable de la literatura negra contemporánea.
