Entre el 25 de juliol i el 2 d'agost de 1909 tingueren lloc barricades, crema d'edificis religiosos i profanació de tombes a Barcelona i altres pobles i ciutats catalanes.La repressió del Govern d'Antoni Maura fou duríssima i arbitrària: 2.000 persones empresonades i una vintena d'afusellades, entre les quals Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia, considerat -sense proves- l'instigador dels fets. El rebuig unànime de la premsa espanyola i europea va obligar Alfons XIII a destituir el president del Govern.
