Esta es la historia de un héroe que no quiso serlo. Joseph Kaplan, médico judío de Praga, inicia en 1910 su singular travesía por la vida atrapado en los turbulentos vaivenes de la historia del siglo XX, que le llevarán de su Praga natal a Argelia, pasando por París, para volver finalmente al punto de partida. La vida de Kaplan discurre entre amores y amistades, desilusiones y esperanzas, y como telón de fondo el ruido infernal de la guerra que recorre Europa y el auge imparable del fascismo. Hasta que un día de 1966 se encuentra con un tal Ernesto G., un magnífico guerrero que va a parar a lo más profundo del campo checo tras su derrota en África?
