Leon Bauer, expatriado norteamericano, ha vivido en ese mundo de sombras, haciendo de correo para los aliados. Ahora que la guerra ha terminado y muchos integrantes de la comunidad internacional se disponen a abandonar la ciudad, Leon recibe un último encargo aparentemente rutinario. Pero algo sale mal, se produce un tiroteo, alguien muere y Leon se ve inmerso en una intriga que le obligará a cuestionarse sus lealtades y sus certezas morales.
