Durante los últimos meses de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, una escuadrilla de bombarderos del ejército estadounidense se ve obligada continuamente a llevar a cabo las misiones más peligrosas en el frente italiano. El piloto John Yossarian, capitán de esa escuadrilla, está obsesionado con la idea de no participar en ninguna incursión aérea más e intenta por todos los medios eludir las órdenes militares y ser devuelto a casa. Pero una vez y otra chocará con la lógica siniestra de las normas militares y la implacable actitud de sus superiores.
